Great walks with Dog Friendly Cafés-Nenthead

Looking for a great place to walk the dog that takes in waterfalls and has a great dog-friendly cafe? Visit Nenthead in the Durham Dales!

Great walks with dog friendly cafes. Dog walkers are always looking for new places to take their dogs. The best walks offer a good balance of exercise and an interesting environment with plenty of variety.

Great , interesting walk with Dog-friendly Café

Here’s a great walk with a dog friendly cafe that you can enjoy together! When you’re looking for somewhere different to walk the dog, perhaps somewhere a little further than the neighbourhood wood, wouldn’t it be great to know some great walks with Dog Friendly Cafes there too?

It’s always worth checking out our local parks, but quite often the most you will find there is a car park if you are lucky. When you are looking for a great walk, Nenthead is worth considering.

Nenthead to Ashgill Force walk

A great option to try with your dog is the village of Nenthead in the Durham Dales. Perhaps the most well-trodden is the walk from Nenthead to Ashgill Force taking in the lovely small village of Garrigil along the way is about a 4 mile walk.

Visit the café at the beginning or at the end of your walk.

The cafe can be at either the beginning or the end of your visit. The Café is called The Hive. I have now visited on three occasions as I was so impressed with this wonderful place. The village of Nenthead is as fascinating as its history, to me there is something special about it. Rugged, friendly and remote to a point. It’s a great walk with a dog friendly cafe.

Nenthead Cumbria Final Thoughts

I feel that Nenthead is really a very special place. There is a genuine charm about the place that gently reveals itself to you. Famous in the past for its Lead and Silver mines and now I guess mostly for tourism.

So what kind of tourist could Nenthead appeal to?

I believe the type of tourist Nenthead will appeal to is quite varied because of its location, the roads themselves that lead you there, the history of the place itself, the wonderful Dog friendly café and the surrounding villages and attractions.

Dog walkers and walkers in general will love this place. Photographers and artists will love it too. I have no doubt that cyclists and motorbikers will definitely love riding the roads to get here and then there are the people who are interested in the history of the Durham Dales. Nenthead is also famous for many firsts:

England’s highest village at 1500 ft

Nenthead was the first purpose-built industrial village in England

Nenthead was the first village in the UK to have electric street lighting from excess power generated by the mines

The Reading Room was the first free library in England

And finally I will say, the café is absolutely lovely, the staff are friendly, the food is nice and its reasonably priced. So, depending on where you live or where you already are on holiday, why not consider giving Nenthead a visit?

I took my partner and daughter here as a birthday gift and we had a fantastic time. My daughter is only 2 so I was worried it would be a difficult shoot. I’m glad to say I was wrong as she was made to feel completely at ease and really got into the shoot. We’ve ended up with so many great photographs the only problem I have now is picking which ones to take home. I could not recommend duo photo highly enough. 5 Simple tips for taking better photos of your dog

5 simple tips for taking better photos of your dog!

5 Simple tips for taking great photos of your dog.

5 Simple tips for taking great photos of your dog. How much would you love to be able to capture great photographs of your Dog when you are out walking around your favourite locations? Wouldn’t it be great to be able to take lovely photographs of your Dog at home, or especially after they have just come back from the Groomers?

Maybe you’re the ‘love to get muddy type’ like your crazy pooch and think that that would make for great photos. Whichever you choose, we are here to give you some helpful tips to get great shots of your favourite furball.

I have always loved taking photographs of our Dogs, they are such a joy to photograph and capturing their personality is one of the best things about Dog photography. I’ve learned over time that it’s not just about getting any old shot, you need to be prepared for what you want to capture.

When you are out walking around your favourite locations with your dog there are many great shots waiting for you: You can get a good profile shot when your dog looks at something or turns his head.

5 simple tips for taking better photos of your dog! Image of a Working Cocker Spaniel on the beech looking out to sea.

Simple but nice photograph of our lovely Working Cocker Spaniel.

Dog Photography can be simple and complicated!

Taking great photos of your Dog can be simple, occasionally complicated. Especially if want to get a very specific shot of your Dog running in dark woodland during the Winter months. For the most part though, you should be able to get some great Dog Photographs if you know the dog well and you are ready.

Simple Tip No 1 for taking better photos of you dog.

So my first tip would be understanding the behaviour of your Dog, are they flighty and barely settle or will they occasionally stop to have a look around?

If you’re dog is flighty, like one of our Working Cocker Spaniels, you need to have your camera ready at all times and by that I also mean have the best settings ‘ dialled in’ ready to share if you have a semi-pro or professional camera.

5 simple tips for taking better photos of your dog!. Pet Photography showing an action shot of a Working Cocker Spaniel leaping in the air to Catch a treat.

Simple tips for better dog photography- be prepared!

Simple Tip No 2 for taking better photos of you dog.

My second tip would be consider the type of background/ environment you will be working in. It much more difficult for a camera to focus on a fast moving Dog in a dingy wood as opposed to a bright sunny beach as there is more available light to work with. See image above as an example.

Simple Tip No 3 for taking better photos of you dog.

Tip 3 is think of the end goal in mind. This is what I do as a Professional Photographer. I start with the end goal, what result does my client want, how do I / they want the image to look? What will the image be used for , as a quick snapshot, as a nice keepsake, or for Social Media, or a better quality image for printing and framing and putting on the walls of your home?

Simple Tip No 4 for taking better photos of you dog.

Tip 4 is if using your phone then before you take the shot, think of what you are actually going to take. If it s mostly about a picture of your dog and no so much the environment, then get much closer than you ordinarily would. This is something I see quite often where a client brings an image they have taken of the dog into the studio to be printed. Quite often the dog is minuscule in relation to the vast empty background.

5 simple tips for taking better photos of your dog! Photo of a Working Cocker Spaniel sitting on the beach posing for its owner whilst sitting on the sand.

Get closer if you want a nice photo of your dog- you can still see its at the beach.

Environmental Dog Portraiture- here the balance looks right between subjects size and background area.

Simple Tip No 5 for taking better photos of you dog.

Tip 5 is don’t get stressed about it! Taking photographs of dogs can be simple and it can also be challenging as they are unpredictable. Enjoy the walk and the exercise and do your best to be prepared, I would day that is the most important thing.

You can see some examples of our Dog Photography images on on our Pet Portraits Page here.

Dog Photography

Dog Photography – North East England

Dog photography is one of the most in demand services in our Duo Photo Studio, located in Team Valley between Newcastle and Gateshead. We totally understand this as we are dog lovers ourselves. James our studio photographer has two working cocker spaniels in the family.

Ed, our studio Videographer is also a dog lover and has a rather active Frenchie who never seems to stop eating!

Meet Rocco, Ed’s beautiful Frenchie. Dog photographer: James Thompson of Duo Photo Studio , 17 Octavian Way, Team Valley,

Understanding a Dog’s Behaviour to ensure they’re enjoying the experience.

Dog Photography: understanding their behaviour is key to good results.

We all want to create great photographs of our pets, it’s one of the most natural things to do. Our pets are part of our family, we love them as family members and more often than not, give them Human names. Such is the level of affection we have as pet owners.

When your dog is running freely along a sandy beach or through some gladed woodland somewhere, they are free to roam and move without restriction. They are usually at their happiest.

Bringing your favourite furball into a studio for example may be a slightly unnerving experience for some pets and we are well aware of this, as we have photographed hundreds of dogs in our studio. As Dog owners we are well aware of the signs a dog may give off to show that it is stressed. Whale eyes, tucked tail, tucked ears and raised hackles are all obvious signs. There is some good advice on dog behaviour here at this page The RSPCA’s website with useful downloadable PDF’s.

Pet Shoot- it’s all about the wellbeing of your pet.

We always advise pet owners to walk their dog first prior to coming into the studio, to burn off some of their energy, so that they are a little bit more settled. When you first come into our studio we will greet your pet first, if they seem comfortable with that. If your pet seems a little uneasy before the pet photoshoot we will give your dog time to have a walk around and become familiar with the environment. At no point will a pet be forced into an environment/ situation they are not comfortable with.

Whilst your pet is getting accustomed to our studio ( which is quite large) we will make you a nice tea or coffee and suggest sitting on our comfy sofas until your dog approaches you or us. We know then, that they are at ease.

Time it takes for a Dog Photoshoot

As explained above, we ensure that your pet is comfortable first before any dog photography takes place. In the rare event that your dog remains ill at ease, we will reschedule the Pet Portrait Session with you, at a time that is convenient for yourselves and our studio availability. You dog’s wellbeing is our first concern. or this reason we do not confirm to a strict time slot. Each dog is different, each dog’s needs are different and so the time needed varies according to their needs and behaviour.

My dog won’t pose for photos!

Dog photography posing tips

Yes, we hear this a great deal. Wish I had a pound for every time someone said that to me. See this image here of a dog where the owner said it would never stay still and pose! I am always surprised because you never know how a dog/ pet will react in the studio. However, what I have found is that if you dont rush the dog, the rewards will come, sometimes at the beginning of the Pet Photography Session, sometimes at the end, when the dog is more rested.

People are always amazed at the results we achieve ( I am not being immodest here) it’s just that we are really patient and we love dogs and that always helps when trying to create the best possible Pet Portrait for you and your family.

Given time your dog will relax and as an experienced pet photographer we have techniques that work with your dog to get the best results.

Indoor Studio Shoot or Outdoor Shoot?

Dog Photography- does the weather put you off?

We can provide both and certainly enjoy doing both. We can meet you at your favourite location if it is outdoors or we can suggest locations for you where we have walked our own dogs and taken photographs of them. A question we ask our clients prior to the Pet Photography Session is ‘ what is the end result you want from the Pet Portrait Session?”

Are you looking to have some lovely photos taken to put in an album, a framed print to stand on a desk/ sideboard, or would you like a piece of wall art to adorn you Living Room, Bedroom or Kitchen Wall? Once we have a clear picture of what you want, we will shoot with that end goal in mind. It’s important to know these things because if you’re deciding on a piece of wall art- Large Framed Gallery Print or Canvas, we can suggest locations/ colours or shoot styles that match the ‘look’ and colours of your home.

A modern, minimalist home may want high key ( bright mainly) images to adorn the walls or something in Black and White to add contrast and act as a main feature of the room. We can match the look of the image and colour and style of frames to correspond with the look and feel of your home.

Outdoor Pet Photography

There are some challenges to this, such as the weather/ wind/ rain etc but the rewards are well worth it. Below are a few examples of a recent shoot at Crimdon Beach, the weather was very changeable yet the light was interesting.

Outdoor Dog Photography Shoot at the beach

Indoor-Studio Based Pet Portrait Session.

It would be easier to assume that this is the easier option but that is not always the case, due to the fact is may be at first, an unfamiliar type of environment for your pet.

However, it is the one environment where we as Pet Photographers have strict control over the light and as a result it is sometimes ( but not always) easier to work this way for a couple of reasons. Firstly, as mentioned, we have total control of the light, we know what direction it is coming from, we have a contact light level ( no clouds passing by) and the dog usually remains where we encourage them to go. That may be down to the treats…

Pet Photography Crimdon

Pet Photography at beautiful Crimdon Beach, Hartlepool.

It’s many years since I ventured to Crimdon, my childhood memories being of a lovely beach, with Crimdon Lido, which at my time I think was a a fairground of some sorts. I remember the sea always seemed to be really far away when the tide was out. Here I am in 2022 returning to Crimdon Beach near Hartlepool with one of my Daughters and the family’s two Working Cocker Spaniels. Almost a gap of 40 years since my last visit.

Crimdon Beach is just as cold ( wind wise) and as beautiful as I remember. The beautiful golden sand dunes carpeted by course green beach grasses, really is a treat to the eye.

There is plenty of parking , offering a combination of both paid and free parking for the more prudent visitor. On leaving the car and heading for the beach, the beautiful golden sands tempt even the most ardent ” I hate getting sand in my shoes type” to explore the golden, undulating dunes. If you would like more information on this location have a look at The Beach Guide for Maps and Reviews. This is a dog-friendly beach.

Capturing your pet’s unique personality in a photograph

Pet photography is an important part of owning a pet, and can be a great way to capture their unique personality. From the unique poses and expressions our pets show us every day, to the unique locations and backgrounds that can only be found on dog walks.

Pet Photography- Image of Margot a Working Cocker Spaniel at Crimson Beach near Hartlepool.

Walking the dog is good exercise for Dog and Owner.

Walking our dog/s can provide both owners and dogs with many health benefits. For owners, regularly walking your dog can reduce stress and make you happier. For dogs, regular walks can help build their confidence and keep them healthy. Dog walking can also help keep your dog physically and mentally stimulated.

Studio and Outdoor Pet Photography

I am fortunate that my Daughter has two beautiful dogs. I grew up with Spaniels during my childhood and I have always loved dogs. As a Portrait Photographer with my own large photography studio based in Team Valley, Gateshead I have the pleasure of taking beautiful portraits of many types of dogs.

Having a studio is very beneficial during inclement weather and I do enjoy working there but what I love most is getting out in the fresh air, taking a camera with me and walking the dogs. There are so many great locations in the North East. If you have a suggestion for a great place to visit, even if its beyond the North East, please let me know, as I will arrange to go there.

Pet photography on the beach-Fleur on the beach at Crimdon-  Pet Portraiture is becoming very popular.

Environmental Pet Portraiture

Environmental Pet Portraiture, or Outdoor Pet Photography is becoming more and more popular, especially with families. Our pets are now considered as part of the family, so why would we leave them out of our family portraits? Especially if the beautiful images we create are to be created into beautiful wall art to adorn our living rooms.

Pet Portraiture is become more popular for wall art to hang in our homes-photo by James Thompson Duophoto.co.uk

Capturing your dog’s personality and mannerisms can be a lot of fun!

Capturing the best images of your pets

Capturing the best images of your pets isn’t always easy, sometimes it is. As we all know, some dogs, especially Cocker Spaniels, love to run and jump and dart all over the place, whether it’s indoors or out. I have been a Professional Photographer for many years and still find it a challenge balancing the challenges of lighting , focussing, and walking with them for miles to find the perfect spot and then getting a good image that is worthy of being create into a family keepsake.

If you would like some top tips that I have learned over the years, then subscribe to our pet photography newsletter and we will pass on some of the hard earned techniques we have learned over the years. I will leave a contact form below if you would to know more and learn some new techniques to take better photographs of your pets.

I went to Duo Photo to have a Company head shot done. The two guys Edson and James were great making me feel at ease and I was very happy with the outcome.
The place is immaculate and I would have no problem in returning if I want anymore photography done.
They also showed me some corporate videos that they have done and again they looked great and it was very interesting how they actually shot these?
100% all round good experience!

This guy James did an excellent job of taking photos of my Guest House in The Lakes. He was professional and took time over detail. I will be using him again next year when and as my rooms change. Very happy with the results.

Professional, friendly and extremely helpful.
