5 Simple tips for taking great photos of your dog. How much would you love to be able to capture great photographs of your Dog when you are out walking around your favourite locations? Wouldn’t it be great to be able to take lovely photographs of your Dog at home, or especially after they have just come back from the Groomers?
Maybe you’re the ‘love to get muddy type’ like your crazy pooch and think that that would make for great photos. Whichever you choose, we are here to give you some helpful tips to get great shots of your favourite furball.
I have always loved taking photographs of our Dogs, they are such a joy to photograph and capturing their personality is one of the best things about Dog photography. I’ve learned over time that it’s not just about getting any old shot, you need to be prepared for what you want to capture.
When you are out walking around your favourite locations with your dog there are many great shots waiting for you: You can get a good profile shot when your dog looks at something or turns his head.
Dog Photography can be simple and complicated!
Taking great photos of your Dog can be simple, occasionally complicated. Especially if want to get a very specific shot of your Dog running in dark woodland during the Winter months. For the most part though, you should be able to get some great Dog Photographs if you know the dog well and you are ready.
Simple Tip No 1 for taking better photos of you dog.
So my first tip would be understanding the behaviour of your Dog, are they flighty and barely settle or will they occasionally stop to have a look around?
If you’re dog is flighty, like one of our Working Cocker Spaniels, you need to have your camera ready at all times and by that I also mean have the best settings ‘ dialled in’ ready to share if you have a semi-pro or professional camera.
Simple Tip No 2 for taking better photos of you dog.
My second tip would be consider the type of background/ environment you will be working in. It much more difficult for a camera to focus on a fast moving Dog in a dingy wood as opposed to a bright sunny beach as there is more available light to work with. See image above as an example.
Simple Tip No 3 for taking better photos of you dog.
Tip 3 is think of the end goal in mind. This is what I do as a Professional Photographer. I start with the end goal, what result does my client want, how do I / they want the image to look? What will the image be used for , as a quick snapshot, as a nice keepsake, or for Social Media, or a better quality image for printing and framing and putting on the walls of your home?
Simple Tip No 4 for taking better photos of you dog.
Tip 4 is if using your phone then before you take the shot, think of what you are actually going to take. If it s mostly about a picture of your dog and no so much the environment, then get much closer than you ordinarily would. This is something I see quite often where a client brings an image they have taken of the dog into the studio to be printed. Quite often the dog is minuscule in relation to the vast empty background.
Simple Tip No 5 for taking better photos of you dog.
Tip 5 is don’t get stressed about it! Taking photographs of dogs can be simple and it can also be challenging as they are unpredictable. Enjoy the walk and the exercise and do your best to be prepared, I would day that is the most important thing.

James is the star of his photos. He is a great photographer with an amazing eye and very attentive to your needs. Great dance photographer can’t wait till my son’s next shoot. Thank you James. It was an absolute pleasure 👍
I went to Duo Photo to have a Company head shot done. The two guys Edson and James were great making me feel at ease and I was very happy with the outcome.
The place is immaculate and I would have no problem in returning if I want anymore photography done.
They also showed me some corporate videos that they have done and again they looked great and it was very interesting how they actually shot these?
100% all round good experience!
Amazing Image Quality
This guy James did an excellent job of taking photos of my Guest House in The Lakes. He was professional and took time over detail. I will be using him again next year when and as my rooms change. Very happy with the results.
I took my partner and daughter here as a birthday gift and we had a fantastic time. My daughter is only 2 so I was worried it would be a difficult shoot. I’m glad to say I was wrong as she was made to feel completely at ease and really got into the shoot. We’ve ended up with so many great photographs the only problem I have now is picking which ones to take home. I could not recommend duo photo highly enough. Professional, friendly and extremely helpful.
